This site has been produced by the "Functional Literacy" project within Wycliffe Associates (UK). We are a registered charity in the UK. If you would like more information about our parent organisation, perhaps with a view to helping support our work, please click here.
What are we all about? Well, we use a concept called "Shell Books". These are "how to do it" booklets produced as computer files that can be printed off locally. The text can be lifted out and replaced in any language - the pictures and all the formatting (the 'Shell') remain. The books can then be used as a resource by literacy workers who are teaching adults to read. The subject matter is generally much more interesting than a simple reading primer! The books can also be used by Community Development workers to teach new skills or to generate interest in new projects.

We are pleased to announce that two new shell book sites are now available: Wycliffe Africa Shell Books and Wycliffe Asia Shell Books. These offer shell books that have been specifically adapted for use throughout Africa and the Far East respectively, but most would be suitable worldwide. At present, the African titles are available in English and some also in French, and a few in Swahili. The Asian books are in English and Indonesian, with a few in Indonesian only, and there are also some books in Thai that will be added in due course. Included are a number of Far Eastern folk stories and numerous delightful children's 'first reading' books that could be used as they are in any culture, or could easily be adapted. There are currently some 150 Asia titles available, and more will be added to both sites as time permits.
You can go to them by clicking on the link either to "Shell Books Africa" or "Shell Books Asia" in the Shells Hub in the left-hand column; a complete list (in a PDF document) of all the books that are available on these sites can be found on the Book Menu. Click on "Download Books" in the main menu above and then select "Full Index" (or click here).
Both sites function in a very similar way to this site. Just click on the "Download Books" item on the Main Menu above and take your pick! The contents of the sites are maintained by Robin Rempel from Wycliffe Africa and Louise Jones from Wycliffe Asia, but the actual sites are hosted by Wycliffe Associates (UK). |
